Le cimetière allemand de Belleau-Torcy

Au début, il n’y avait que des croix noires en bois. Dans ce cimetière militaire reposent 8.625 allemands tombés au cours de la guerre 14–18, dont 15 soldats juifs. En réalité, il y a 4 corps par croix, 2 de chaque côté.

Dans une fosse commune reposent 4 322 militaires allemands de la première guerre mondiale, 487 ont pu être identifiés. En 1926 suite à un accord entre le France et l’Allemagne, le cimetière sera modifié et embelli, avec en 1927, la construction d’un mur d’enceinte et deux petits bâtiments de chaque côté de l’entrée pour le personnel d’entretien.

200 arbres sont plantés et une croix centrale est construite mais les croix en bois restent. Suite à une convention de 1966, pour la première fois le Gouvernement Fédéral Allemand participe financièrement à l’entretien des cimetières, ce qui n’était pas le cas auparavant et en 1972 les croix de bois sont remplacées par des croix de pierre, puis dans les années 1980, 15 stèles Israelites sont construites pour identifier les soldats juifs (qui étaient auparavant enterrés aux côtés de leurs camarades d’arme sans différenciation), portant en hébreux l’inscription...." Ici repose..." et au dessous : " Son âme reste parmi les vivants...." 

À l’entrée du cimetière se trouve une boite contenant un dossier avec le nom des soldats allemands enterrés à Belleau, ainsi que le site : http://www.volksbund.de, où on peut retrouver des informations sur les soldats disparus.

Created in 1922, the German cemetery of Belleau is located a few hundred meters from the American cemetery of Belleau. At the beginning there were only black wooden crosses.

In this military cemetery lie 8,625 Germans who died during the 1st World War, including 15 Jewish soldiers. In reality, there are 4 bodies per cross, 2 on each side.

In a mass grave lie 4,322 German soldiers from the First World War, 487 have been identified. In 1926 following an agreement between France and Germany, the cemetery has been modified and renovated, with in 1927, the construction of a wall and two small buildings on each side of the entrance for the staff.

200 trees have been planted and a central cross built but the wooden crosses remained. Following an agreement of 1966, for the first time the German Federal Government contributes financially for these cemeteries, which was not the case before and in 1972 the wooden crosses are replaced by stones. In the 1980s, 15 Israelite stelae were built to identify Jewish soldiers (who were previously buried alongside to their comrades in arms without any difference), bearing in Hebrew the inscription .... "Here lies ..." and at below : "His soul remains among the living ...."

At the entrance to the cemetery is a box containing a file with the all the names of the German soldiers buried in Belleau, as well as the site : http://www.volksbund.de where anyone can find information about a missing soldier.
